About me

Yaël Bratel is PhD Candidate at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, dept. Urban Planning and Environment, division Urban and Regional studies.

My research lies at the intersection of Just Urban Design and Cultural Geography. My core area of investigation is the social dimension of urban design more particular, the design and processes of just public realm. I am going to explore, among other issues, how social practices in public space shape and redefine the meanings and contexts of justice.

Before turning to academia, I worked for a decade as an urban planner both in the private and public sector in Sweden. I gained experience in just participatory urban design, master planning and issues of social sustainability. This experience certainly contributed to enrich my academic background. Amongst other things, it made me more sensitive to issues of justice and the importance of user perspective in planning and design when undertaking research.
