About me

Seren Dincel is a doctoral candidate in Architectural Design, Technology and Representation at the KTH School of Architecture. Her research examines lighting technologies in relation to nocturnal ecology and urban planning, with a focus on multispecies coexistence in urban and peri-urban green spaces after dark. Using research-through-design, she combines full-scale prototypes, in situ measurements, questionnaires, professional interviews and studies of international design projects.

Her academic and professional background extends from interior architecture and spatial design to lighting design at urban scales. She holds master’s degrees in Architectural Lighting Design from Hochschule Wismar and in Interior Architecture and Spatial Design from Sapienza University of Rome, and a bachelor’s degree in Interior Architecture and Environmental Design from Bahcesehir University in Istanbul. Before beginning her doctorate, she worked at AFRY Architects, Zumtobel, Sweco and JVL Studio, contributing to projects in Sweden and internationally. She has given guest lectures in KTH’s master’s programme in Architectural Lighting Design since 2022. In spring 2026, she taught an advanced-level seminar course on nocturnal ecologies for architecture students.

From 2022 to 2025, the doctoral project formed part of NorDark, a transdisciplinary consortium funded by NordForsk and the Swedish Energy Agency. Her work within the consortium spanned Lighting Design (WP4) at KTH and Chronobiology (WP2) at Stockholm University. Since 2026, her doctoral research has been supported by a grant from Bertil och Britt Svenssons Stiftelse för Belysningsteknik.
