About me
Ilias Dimoulkas was born in Florina, Greece. He received the Diploma in Electrical and Computer Engineering from Aristotle University of Thessaloniki in 2007 and the M.Sc. in Energy Generation and Management from National Technical University of Athens in 2010. He is currently a Ph.D. student within the Electric Power Systems department at KTH. His research interests include optimization techniques in power system operation and planning, electricity price and load forecasting methods and electricity markets operation.
Flexible District Heating and Cooling Systems in Electricity Markets with Large Amounts of Wind Power
A large-scale expansion of wind and solar power will result in larger price volatility in the spot market, increased need for real-time balancing and an increased interest for intra-day trading. In together, these impacts will increase the profitability of power plants who are capable to vary their generation both on an hourly scale and within the hour. Traditionally, the power output of Combined Heat and Power (CHP) plants has been controlled by the heat demand, but it would be possible to make investments that allow heat and electricity generation to be more separated. To evaluate such investments, it is necessary to understand how CHP plants would operate in electricity markets with large amounts of wind and solar power. This project aims at developing tools for short-term operation planning of CHP systems in such market environments.
