Kristian Hultqvist

My research focuses on the relationship between artificial intelligence, democracy, and human capabilities. I examine how new technologies can challenge and reshape democratic institutions (for example, by complicating accountability in algorithmic decision-making), but also how they can be designed to strengthen people’s democratic capabilities.

The project combines philosophy of technology and literary studies to shed light on both the normative and the cultural dimensions of AI’s impact on democracy. A central part of the work investigates the role literature has played in shaping our moral imagination—our ability to imagine and understand the life situations of others—and how that role may be transformed in a world where an increasing share of texts are machine-generated.
