About me

Urban Sound Design - methods for qualitative sound analysis is a design-driven PhD-project pursued at KTH School of Architecture in collaboration with Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design.

The research is concerned with the challenge of understanding and communicating questions regarding urban space in relation to acoustic quality and how it is possible to broaden the prevailing defensive attitude towards urban sounds today. Understanding the different sonic qualities of everyday environments and how they interact and affect us is necessary when taking these issues into account on a professional and conscious level.

The research methodology is interdisciplinary to its character and blends qualitative and quantitative approaches of data-collecting with visual and sonic observations and analyses.

Through the testing and evaluation of alternative as well as existing models  of presentation and communication this project aims at extending  the field of urban sound knowledge, its strategies and applicable tools. One essential query in this research is how to facilitate a practice based approach among practitioners working with the design and management of urban sonic space.
