About me

I am since November 2024 emeritus professor at the department of Engineering Mechanics KTH. Presently, I am involved in research projects on lithium-ion batteries and surface crack evolution in hard metal tools run by professors Artem Kulachenko and Jonas Faleskog respectively.

The research on lithium-ion batteries was initiated 2018 after my period as president of KTH (2007-2016). Surface crack evolution was one of the themes in the center “Mechanics and Materials Design” (MMD) that was established in 2020 as a collaboration between Solid Mechanics and Materials Science and Engineering at KTH together with participating industries.

Over the years as professor in material mechanics at KTH I have been running research projects on fracture mechanics, dynamic fracture mechanics, composite materials, acoustic emission, modeling of wave propagation, mechano-sorptive creep in paper, mechanics of microelectronic components, micromechanical modelling of metals, plasticity on small scales, lithium-ion batteries. My PhD in 1982 was focused on effects of cracks on the dynamical behavior of structures.

I am chairman of the board for “Wallenberg Wood Science Center”, a center at KTH funded by Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation with KTH, Chalmers and Linköping University as partners.

I have a MSc degree in Engineering Physics (1979) and a PhD degree in Solid Mechanics (1982), both from KTH. Before my positions as Professor (1992-), Head of department (1993-2005), Vice-Dean of faculty (2007) and President (2007-2016) at KTH, I have more than twelve years of experience from business as research engineer (Brown Boveri Research Centre, Switzerland), consultant (Tre Konsulter AB, Vaxholm) and CEO (SICOMP - Swedish Institute of Composites, Piteå).
