Research in Energy Polygeneration field, modelling of Energy Systems.

Topic of Research: Performance of Micro Gas Turbines in different regions

Small scale polygeneration facilities are becoming popular due to the energetic profile that the world is developing. This profile is the cause of the effort that is being put onto the research of this type of energetic services. In order to cover the worldwide exponential increasing energetic demand.

The main idea is to use an externally fired micro gas turbine (EF-MGT) within these polygeneration facilities, for rural electrification proposes in Bolivia.

Bolivia is a country, where there are three marked regions: high plateaus, valleys and plains.

At the high plateaus the pressure is lower than normal (3000 – 4200 MASL). This will eventually affect the performance of a micro gas turbines. Although in this region the solar energy is a very good option.

The valleys are an intermediate zone (1500 – 2800 MASL) where the solar energy is still a good option, but the fuel availability is broader, so you can easily think about hybrid systems. And finally the plains (100 – 1000 MASL) where the biomass availability is very high and also there are a lot of farms from which its wastes can be converted in biogas.

The EF-MGT has the versatility that can work with almost any heat source that reaches around 700ºC. It can work with Solar Concentrators, Biogas, Biomass, Syngas, Natural gas, etc.
