Challenges for power system modelling and simulation (Frederico Milano) Abstract: In recent years, power systems have undergone deep changes. The transition from conventional power plants to distributed renewable energy sources and from monolithic power systems to quickly evolving “smart grids” force to constantly reconsider device and control models and to refurbish existing simulation tools. This short seminar briefly outlines some current challenges for power system modeling and simulation. In particular, the seminar discusses modelling and stability issues of power systems formulated as stochastic and functional differential-algebraic equations, which appear adequate to reproduce the uncertainty of renewable energy sources as well as the signal delays that can affect modern control systems. Finally, the seminar discusses the challenges offered by parallel computing to renew power system analysis tools.¶
