Biomass has turned into a major reliable renewable energy source for heat, electricity generation and fuel in the transport sector. In fact, biomass is expected to continue playing a key role in the share of renewables used in Europe. A larger use of bioenergy depends on resource availability and the establishment of effective production chains that can turn it into a competitive alternative among other renewables and conventional options. Moreover, this expansion has to face three main barriers in Europe.
