You decide the specialization according to your interests. You have a lot of freedom in your course choice, but there are also some requirements that need to be fulfilled to obtain your degree. You are welcome to study at KTH for two years (or even more if necessary), but our experience is that many students want to pass all requirements for the degree in 1.5 years, which is possible if you plan your studies well.

The following minimum requirements apply

For students nominated for 60 credits courses and the final degree project:
• Completed technical/science courses (of which at least 42 credits must be within one specialisation): 60 credits
• Master’s Degree Project: 30 credits

Towards the 42 credits within a Master Programme count the mandatory and conditionally elective courses. Some of the programs have a list of “elective courses” in the course lists. Those courses are to be seen as recommended elective courses, but they do not count towards the 42 credits specialization courses required for the diploma.

For students nominated for 3 terms of courses (final degree project at home university):
• Completed technical/science courses according to an individual study plan
within a master specialization: 90 credits

Mandatory courses:

• Course in sustainability.
  • The course "The Sustainable ELF/ELP/INN/SCR Engineer" is offered as a 1,5 credits version, covering one year, for double degree students in four Master programme specializations. (EF2221/EH2221/EQ2223/EL2221).
  • For other specializations we refer to the course II2210. 
•  A course in theory and methodology of science (like AK2036/AK2030). This course is offered in different periods a year so you should be able to find a time in your study plan that works. 

Every student must have an approved study plan. The study plan is put together individually and has to be approved by the programme director. Please check the requirements with your home university as well. If you have questions please contact your international coordinator or programme director.

Please note: You are not allowed to have courses with too much overlap in your degree. E.g. you cannot take II2202 and II2210 or take a very similar course at KTH that you already studied at your home university.

For students admitted prior to autumn term 2022:

• Swedish language courses up to level B1/B2: 30 credits (without previous knowledge)
Students from autumn term 2022 do not have to take Swedish language courses. However we still encourage you to learn at least some Swedish given that you aim for a Swedish professional degree.
