What to study?

You decide the specialization according to your interests. You have a lot of freedom in your course choice, but there are also some requirements that need to be fulfilled to obtain your degree. You are welcome to study at KTH for two years (or even more if necessary), but our experience is that many students want to pass all requirements for the degree in 1.5 years, which is possible if you plan your studies well.

The following minimum requirements apply

• Completed technical/science courses at advanced level (of which at least 42 credits must be within one specialization): 60 credits
• Swedish language courses up to level B1/B2: 30 credits (without previous knowledge)
• Master’s Degree Project: 30 credits
= Total: 120 credits

Towards the 42 credits within a Master Programme count the mandatory and conditionally elective courses. Some of the programs have a list of “elective courses” in the course lists. Those courses are to be seen as recommended elective courses, but they do not count towards the 42 credits specialization courses required for the diploma.

Mandatory courses:

  • A course in sustainability. Recommended II2210 which is an online course.
  • A course in theory and methodology of science (DA2205/DA2210).

Those two courses count towards the 42 credits within the program.

Every student must have an approved study plan. The study plan is put together individually and has to be approved by the programme director. Please check the requirements with your home university as well. If you have questions please contact your international coordinator.

Please note: You are not allowed to have overlaps in the courses of your degree. E.g. you cannot take II2202 and II2210 or take a very similar course at KTH that you already studied at your home university.
