Call for papers

Call for papers MID Doctoral conference 2013

For the second time the Doctoral Program in Mediated Communication at CSC/KTH is organizing a doctoral conference. This event is an opportunity for every PhD-student to present their work to fellow doctoral students and the senior researchers at the department. Each PhD-student in the program is expected to submit a short paper that will be presented at the event, then discussed with a senior researcher and another PhD-student who have read the paper. After that, the audience will be let into the discussion. The conference will also include a Pecha-Kucha session where the PhD-student will shortly present who they are apart from their research. The main social event of the conference will be a dinner/party held on the evening on the second day.

Date of the conference: 16-17th of May 2013

Where: The VIC-centre at CSC

Deadlines (for the PhD-students):

  • 23rd of April, a TITLE and SHORT SUMMARY of maximum 500 words. Submit by filling in the Google form.
  • 30 of April, send your SHORT PAPER to Fredrik Enoksson, fen@kth.se. Use the CHI extended abstract format for your submission (can be downloaded from [1]). Submitted paper should be no longer than 4 pages including references. If possible, single out the points you would especially like to get feedback on or have discussed during the conference.

One purpose of the conference is to give each PhD-student the opportunity to present their research in a friendly and constructive situation before presenting it “in the wild”, for example at a conference. Therefore, the submitted paper does not need to be finished or polished to perfection. It does however need to be intelligible for your peers at the department.

Exactly what you submit is up to you, this could be parts of a paper you are working on, or future research (in case you are a new PhD-student). Discuss with your supervisor if you still feel uncertain about what to submit. This year we have decided to have a stricter format for the submissions, which is the CHI extended abstract format (can be found at [1]). The reason for this is to avoid confusion and also to give an indication of how much effort should be put into the short paper. It also gives the audience a good chance to read the paper in advance.

Additional material may be included, but please note that you should expect your discussants to have have read only the short paper, even though all the material that you submit will be sent to them. Also, all short papers will be made available to in this group.

Best regards from the organizing-committee,

Filip Kis, Marcus Nilsson, Maria Svedin, Fredrik Enoksson and Pedro Ferreira
