Grégoire Stouck | Project 1 2010 Architectures of Interdisciplinarity design studio 2010 - 2011

During the 2010-2011 cycle of the studio the overarching theme was industrial architecture with a final project combining an Energy-from-Waste power plant with a public program.

Course 4:1 - fall 2010 Project 1 | Elsa Wifstrand

Elsa Wifstrand | Project 1 2010 The first course was sequenced as three design workshops looking at well defined spatial design tasks, and intermittent research and technique training.These assignments has formed the studio culture, based on the concepts, methods and technologies introduced, all relating to form as associated with spatial configuration, structure and material fabrication.

A study trip to London was facilitated at the end of the first course; during this trip students met a number of practitioners representing the state of the art in fields of architectural design and engineering consultancy. The final review will be held in London, and a collaborative workshop in parametric design will be facilitated at the Architectural Association.

Course 4:2 - fall 2010 None

Grégoire Stouck and Ecehan Top | Project 2 2010 The second course introduced a more complex design assignment with a well defined programmatic condition, as well as consulting specialist to inform design development. The projects were developed in teams of two, with strong support from tutors and external consultants.

Course 4:3 + 4:4 - spring 2011 None

Kathryn Bell | Project 3 + 4 2011 During the spring final projects on Energy from Waste facilities were developed in two stages. The third semester introduced the main design project of the year. The assignment was to develop the overall scheme, and identify particular interesting concerns that could be investigated further in the final semester. Methods for interdisciplinary collaboration were of particular interest. The outcome of the project included a schematic proposal, as well as a proposed strategy and schedule for the work in the 4th project, especially in regards to interdisciplinary collaboration.The 4th project provided opportunity to focus on one or more aspects of the design proposal, and to go into depth. This could be directed towards fabrication, interdisciplinary design methodologies and/or particular concerns for the main design brief.

5th year diploma thesis - spring 2011 None

Anna Teglund | Diploma Thesis 2011 The diploma thesis should regard the issues explored in the studio, such as digital design, interdisciplinarity and new technology. The scope could be biased towards design proposals or more research oriented work, and diploma students had the option of following the yearly theme or proposing their own agenda.

Elsa Wifstrand | Diploma Thesis 2011 Staff 2010 - 2011 Professor Hanif Kara is a London based structural engineer. Since co-founding Adams Kara Taylor his particular ‘design-led’ approach and interest in innovative form and material uses, prefabrication, sustainable construction and complex analysis methods have allowed him to work on award-winning and unique projects with leading Architects and designers including Alsops, David Chipperfield, Foreign Office Architects, Foster and Partners, Thomas Heatherwick, Machado & Silvetti and Zaha Hadid.

Lina Martinsson Achi is an architect (AA MA, KTH MArch), researcher, educator, and writer specialised in process and tool design at the intersection of architecture and structural engineering. She is particularly interested in exploring and developing parametric and structural design concepts and technologies. She is a graduate of the KTH School of Architecture in Stockholm and the Architectural Association Graduate School in London. Lina is currently developing her Industrial Doctorate research project at Tyréns engineering firm in Stockholm, as well as contributing to the firm’s ongoing and future initiatives on interdisciplinary tools and methodologies.

Jonas Runberger is an architect, researcher and educator. His main interests involve the relation between design techniques, architectural production and experiential effect, with an emphasis on the impact of digital technology on both experimental and conventional practice. He is a director of Dsearch, a digital design environment within White Architects, and a founding partner of the Krets research group. He is completing his PhD at the department of Project Communication at the KTH School of Architecture and the Built Environment.

Paul Scott is a Director at Adams Kara Taylor responsible for the technical aspects and the delivery of projects. His work at AKT over the last 14 years has included the Pheano Science Centre with Zaha Hadid Architects in Germany and the Henderson Crossing in Singapore with IJP Architects. His interests are in the development of the technical tools to help realise such projects but also in the link with construction and the constraints and technology of the local environment.

Sander Schuur is an architect at White Arkitekter, with a design lead role in several projects as well as part of the Dsearch network. He has previously worked at Asymptote (New York) and UN Studio (Rotterdam).

The studio had further support by teaching assistents Raimo Joss and Alexander Trimboli, who provided additional expertise in parametric modelling and fabrication.
