Mathematical Methods in Electromagnetics
Mariana Dalarsson organized the second edition of the workshop "Mathematical Methods in Electromagnetics" on the 14th of October.
In 2025 and 2026, Mariana Dalarsson initiated and organized two editions of the Workshop on Mathematical Methods in Electromagnetics, hosted at KTH.
Researchers in mathematics and electromagnetics rarely attend the same scientific conferences, despite the substantial potential for cross-fertilization between these fields. The aim of starting this workshop was therefore to create a meeting place for these communities, and to establish a foundation for sustained interdisciplinary exchange and future collaboration.
The two-day workshop brought together electromagnetic researchers, mathematicians, and researchers from institutes, primarily from the Nordic countries, to explore common scientific interests and identify opportunities for collaboration. The interdisciplinary character of the initiative is reflected in the participant composition: in 2025, mathematics and electromagnetics faculty each accounted for 50% of the participants, while the 2026 edition brought together mathematics faculty (35%), electromagnetics faculty (45%), and research institute researchers (20%). Invited speakers represented institutions including Stockholm University, Luleå University of Technology, the University of Gävle, Lund University, Aalto University, and the University of Oslo, etc.
The scientific scope spans mathematical methods in electromagnetics, wave propagation, metamaterials, time-varying media, partial differential equations, complex analysis, convex optimization, numerical analysis, homogenization, perturbation theory, and physical bounds. By bringing together complementary expertise across these areas, the workshop creates opportunities to identify shared research questions and approaches that may not emerge within individual disciplines, and contributes to forming partnerships between mathematics and electromagnetics.
