Title: Introduction to tangible interaction

Abstract:
Tangible interaction, i.e. interactive systems that are partially based on graspable items, such as cards, blocks, dolls, pens, and other physical objects, has recently emerged as a distinct field within interaction design. This domain includes some of the most innovative, but also very mundane forms of interactions – ranging from public transport pass cards, to car keys, to children’s toys, musical instruments, and new forms of computer programming. In this talk, I will give an overview of how this field has matured over the last decade, from a visionary research program to an established design domain that brings together knowledge practices of software development, product design, electrical engineering, and the arts. Importantly, the field of tangible interaction has generated interesting philosophical discussions regarding the foundations of computing and electronic media, and what is valued or taken for granted in the design of interactive technology.
