Materials Science and Engineering

At KTH’s Department of Materials Science and Engineering we have a specialist expertise in metallic and ceramic materials as well as innovating towards more sustainable materials. Our approach tends to take a holistic approach, covering the Processes – Structures – Properties process and involving Characterisation. Within the holistic perspective, we often deeply assess one or more of the process elements. Activities include experimental work and modelling at different length scales. KTH has a leading position internationally in the materials sciences.

Reserach units

Research units lead and participate in initiatives as well as take responsibility for sustaining competences in the Processes – Structures – Properties process, including Characterisation of Processes, Structures and Properties.

Key laboratories and centers

Research initiatives are often collaborative and organised in centres, which involve partners from industry as well as other universities and institutes – also internationally. Research activities often also make extensive use of key facilities such as our laboratories and the national infrastructures we led.

Why KTH? MSE's researchers' perspectives

Basant Roodhe, Postdoc

I chose KTH for its robust materials science foundation and rigorous physics-based approach. KTH:s integration of theory and experiment, along with advanced computing resources, provides an ideal environment to model and design functional materials for sensing and energy applications.

Laia Ortiz Membrado, Postdoc

KTH has a strong reputation in materials science with excellent experimental facilities. I was interested in experiencing a different research environment, and Stockholm offers a good balance between professional opportunities and quality of life.

Enrico Bergamaschi, PhD

I chose KTH to gain international experience and continue my research. With strong reputation and the well-equipped Hultgren Lab, as well as long tradition in materials science, KTH offers an excellent environment to develop my expertise.
