The Sustainable Transformation Seminars spring 2023 series is held monthly, usually on a Friday. The seminar series will continue to be online.

Seminar description

‘Take-make-use-dispose’ is the linear approach to production and consumption that our society relies on. In the long run, this is not sustainable as the natural resources and the waste-carrying capacity of the earth are limited. Therefore, it is essential to reduce dependency on natural resources by decoupling economic growth from resource consumption. In this venture, both society and the manufacturing industry have a vital role to play. Society needs to shift towards a Circular Economy that rests upon the philosophy of ‘take-make-use-reuse’ and the manufacturing industry has to be a major stakeholder in this shift.

Despite being proven to be both economically and environmentally beneficial, successful examples of circular systems are few today. In this backdrop, it is essential that future decision and change-makers are equipped with the necessary knowledge and skills to implement Circular Manufacturing Systems for a sustainable future.

The seminar is about the Circular Manufacturing Systems (CMS) framework and the role of digitalisation in implementing CMS, which will be discussed in the context of a real-industrial case. After the seminar, the participants will be able to describe the fundamentals of Circular Manufacturing Systems (CMS) and understand the importance of digitalisation in the transition from a linear to a CMS.

Farazee Asif  is active in research in the area of Circular Manufacturing Systems (CMS) since 2009 and has been appointed as a Docent in CMS recently. He is the coordinator of the CMS research team at KTH and has done research in CMS in collaboration with industrial and research partners across Europe. His research has been funded through EU FP7, H2020, Eureka Eurostar, Horizon Europe, FFI, Production 2030, and IoT Sweden etc.

He led several projects and research tasks in various projects, including the EU FP7 project ReCoM (www.rescoms.eu) and the H2020 project ReCiPSS(www.recipss.eu). He also led the project management team in the ReCiPSS project. He is the Principal Investigator and the scientific lead of the Horizon Europe-funded DiCiM project(www. https://www.dicimproject.eu/) that kicked off in January 2023. He is one of the founding members of the CE@KTH platform and a member of the research team. He has been involved in developing the M.Sc. PhD and Life Long Learning courses in CMS and actively teaching in these courses.

His research interest is in implementing CMS in different manufacturing sectors, developing analysis methods and decision support tools for assessing different aspects of CMS implementation and developing enabling methods and tools for CMS implementation.

Connection to Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs)

CMS refers to a manufacturing system that is designed intentionally for closing the loop of products/components, preferably in their original form, through adopting a multiple lifecycle approach. This approach directly addresses the SDG goals 12 and 9.
