Swedish research funders cover the costs of publishing
Several Swedish research funders have come together to cover the costs of publishing with a range of fully open access publishers, including MDPI.
From January 1, 2026, MDPI is included among the publishers whose journals Swedish research funders have decided to cover for researchers. This allows unlimited open access publishing in MDPI journals and applies to all article types. All articles are published under a CC-BY license.
Corresponding authors at KTH should choose KTH as their organisational affiliation when submitting manuscripts and they will then automatically be included in the agreement.
The Swedish research funding agencies Forte, Formas, Vinnova and The Swedish Research Council have jointly decided to finance the APC fee of publishers that hold only fully open access journals. MDPI is covered by this from January 1, 2026, which means that all researchers at KTH can publish in MDPI journals without fees for author or organisation. Authors at KTH do not need to do anything extra for the handling to work.
Journals included in the funders agreement are: Copernicus , eLife , Frontiers , JMIR Publications , MJS Publishing , PLOS , MDPI and Pensoft Publishers .
