KTH now has access to The Bloomsbury Global Encyclopedia of Women in Architecture, 1960–2020, a comprehensive and unique two-volume work that fills a major gap in architectural history by making women’s contributions visible worldwide.

The encyclopedia contains over 1,000 entries and 600 images, and is the result of work by more than 350 contributors from around the globe, several of whom are affiliated with KTH. Covering the period when women first began to gain a significant presence in architectural education up to the present day, it presents biographies of architects, landscape architects, planners, scholars, and activists from more than 135 countries. In addition to individual biographies, the work addresses key themes such as feminism, activism, preservation, pedagogy, technology, and global networks.

Sweden’s contributions to the encyclopedia were coordinated by Meike Schalk (KTH), Helena Mattsson (KTH), and Thérese Kristiansson, who organized workshops and coordinated texts from 17 authors. In the fall of 2019, students at the KTH School of Architecture, enrolled in the course “Sweden and The Bloomsbury Global Encyclopedia of Women in Architecture, 1960–2015”, contributed preparatory research to the project. Sweden’s contribution to the encyclopedia was supported by the Arkus Foundation, which aims to promote practice-oriented research and development in architecture and the built environment.
