External research funding

KTH has a high proportion of external research funding both from the public sector and from other actors in Sweden and abroad. In 2022, external funders accounted for about 62 percent of the research revenues. KTH receives funding from a large number of organisations, but the main contributors are the Swedish Research Council, the Wallenberg Foundations and the EU.

KTH is an active participant in projects funded by the EU's various programmes for research and innovation. EU funding thus constitutes a rather large part of KTH's external research funding.

Strategic research areas

Strategic research areas are major investments in research by the Swedish Government in research with strategic significance for society and industry. KTH is active in 10 out of 20 strategic areas, and has a leading role in five of them.
