Seminar - 6G for Connected Sky
Welcome to our first seminar of the new year!
Time: Wed 2024-02-14 13.15 - 14.00
Participating: Cicek Cavdar
Flying vehicles are becoming ubiquitous unprecedentedly due to the advancements in aviation and space industries. In addition to already deployed geosynchronous Earth orbit (GEO) satellites, low Earth orbits (LEO) satellites are being deployed in large numbers to provide connectivity to ground users. Furthermore, high altitude platforms (HAPs) stand as another connectivity option for the ground users. Besides, unmanned aerial vehicles, also known as drones, and flying taxis are emerging as users in the sky, which require robust and reliable communication connectivity for their safe and secure operation. Although there are different connectivity solutions specific to certain limited domains, integrated connectivity solutions and a holistic network architecture are vital to unlock potentials of the recent advances and create new services for both ground and aerial users. Under this context, this talk will summarise "6G for Connected SKY" project vision and early outcomes focusing on reliable and robust connectivity for aerial and ground users via flexible and adaptive 6G networks with integrated terrestrial and non-terrestrial connectivity.
Cicek Cavdar is an Associate Professor, leading a research group on Intelligent Network Systems at the School of EECS at KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Sweden. She finished her Ph.D studies in Computer Science, University of California, Davis and in Istanbul Technical University, Turkey in 2009. She had leading roles in several European projects in the areas of aerial communications and green networks such as EU EIT Digital projects "5GrEEn: Towards Green 5G Mobile Networks" and "Seamless Direct Air to Ground Communications (DA2GC) in Europe- ICARO-EU". 2015-2018, she served as the leader of Swedish cluster for the EU Celtic Plus project SooGREEN "Service Oriented Optimization of Green Mobile Networks“, and from 2018 she has the same role in the EU Celtic Plus project AI4Green “Artificial Intelligence for Green Mobile Networks”. Her research interests include design and analysis of telecommunication networks with focus on non-terrestrial networks, UAV communications, cell-free network architectures, edge/cloud computing, AI assisted green networks. She is the technical coordinator of EU project 6G-SKY - 6G for Connected Sky which has started recently.
