FLUX – A center for Fluid Science Driving Technology and Sustainability
Fluid mechanics is at the heart of many of society's most pressing technological and environmental challenges—from the transition to sustainable energy and urban cooling to breakthroughs in aviation, defence, and biotechnology. With FLUX, KTH aims to strengthen its world-leading position in this critical field.
The FLUX initiative builds on KTH’s internationally recognised excellence in fluid mechanics, extending the impact of cutting-edge research into strategic domains including AI, energy systems, bio-based materials, and climate technology. Anchored in a vision to accelerate innovation and sustainability, FLUX will:
- Develop leading-edge AI tools for fluid mechanics to accelerate impact on technology and sustainability.
- Address specific bottlenecks in strategic industries, such as thermal management in electronics, hypersonic flows, and electrolyser performance.
- Intersect with biology and chemistry to accelerate key areas in biotechnology and biomaterials, including microfluidics for drug delivery, flow control for medical applications, and bio-based material production.
- Contribute to the transition to a sustainable society by focusing on CO2 separation, capture
With strong foundations in high-performance computing, unique experimental infrastructure, and collaborations across academia and industry, FLUX will position KTH at the forefront of global innovation. The initiative supports Sweden’s strategic priorities in security, competitiveness, and sustainability, while advancing KTH’s long-term vision of research excellence and societal impact.
