KTH’s initiative on large-scale battery production is officially underway. This week, researchers and experts from various departments gathered for a kick-off event to map out existing knowledge, establish connections, and hold their first joint workshop.

“In Sweden, we are taking up the challenge of large scale production of high-quality batteries,” explained Christophe Duwig, one of the initiative’s key figures.

Addressing this challenge is exactly what KTH’s expertise is set to tackle. Nearly 30 researchers and specialists attended the inaugural meeting of the strategic initiative 3PC (Process, Production, Product, and Circularity), held at KTH Innovation’s premises.

The main purpose of the gathering was to foster new connections and identify the expertise available across KTH—and how it can contribute to the initiative.

Magnus Burman shared insights from leading battery fairs in Asia, a region that continues to dominate global battery production. He highlighted key industry trends, including scaling up production, sustainability, and battery safety. Sweden, he noted, has its own competitive advantages, such as an abundant supply of low-cost electricity and water, and above all: a highly skilled workforce.

The event concluded with a workshop where participants discussed their areas of interest and expertise, setting the stage for future collaboration.

“The key for success is to mobilize talented researchers across key disciplines. Today, we have production experts, electrochemists, material scientists and process technology researchers talking together. It is a very good start,” said Christophe Duwig.
