Swedish for advanced beginners

This course is open for fee-paying Master’s students and scholarship holders who have finished the course Introduction to the Swedish society, language and culture. It is free of charge and does not give academic credits. You will improve your practical language skills (reading, listening, writing and speaking) and expand your grammar and vocabulary. Upon completing the course, you will have reached the level A2 according to CEFR, the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.

Eligible students

Fee-paying Master’s students and scholarship holders who have passed the online test from Introduction to Swedish Language and Culture are given priority to the course. Other students can be admitted subject to availability, but our recommendation to other international students and exchange students with a basic level of Swedish is to apply for LS1512 Swedish A2 for Engineers  (7.5 credits).

Schedule

The classes - 12 in total in periods 3 and 4 - will be held in groups of maximum 30 students. In the spring of 2025, you can choose to attend the classes either on KTH main campus or online. You can only be admitted to group, and it's not an option to switch between the groups.

Group 1: Wednesdays 15:00-17:00, KTH Main Campus (start date: 22 January)

Group 2: Thursdays 16-18, online, (start date: 23 January)

Workload

Besides the scheduled two hours a week, the workload can be up to 3 hours a week depending on your initial level of Swedish. Please be aware that attending the classes only without doing the individual work will make you fall behind quickly. We recommend you to sign up for the course only if you have a serious committment to learning Swedish in a systematic way and investing time in it.

In the end of the course, there will be a final test. Passing the test makes you eligble for the third course, Professional Swedish.

Prerequisites

You must have passed final test from Introductory course: Swedish language and culture or a similar basic Swedish course (CEFR A1). Students who have not taken the introductory course and passed the test must take our placement test  before applying for this course:
