SAPEM 2014: Symposium on the Acoustics of Poro-Elastic Materials

KTH will host the fourth edition of the Symposium on the Acoustics of Poro-Elastic Materials, during the 16th, 17th and 18th of December 2014. This international symposium brings together researchers who will present and discuss the most up-to-date contributions in modelling, characterisation and applications of acoustic porous media. Researchers from adjacent disciplines concerned with porous media will also present eamples of industrial applications, and contribute to the general discussion on future challenged for this area of research.

The potential for multi-functionality in poro-elastic materials originates from scales ranging from nanometers to millimeters. This opens up for a vast opportunity for tailoring, but does as well pose a formidable challenge which is related to not only assessing the relevance of various interaction phenomena, but also disentangling their respective contributions and, in the end, understanding how processes occurring at different scales combine into a certain macroscopic behavior. As the current state-of-the-art continues to evolve, a number of unsolved problems still remain. These are problems associated with modeling and characterization, computational methods, non-linear effects, multiple pore scales, structures of sub-wavelength sizes, conflicting demands for inherent material multi-functionality and enhanced sustainability.
