The KTH Reactor Hall

The KTH Reactor Hall is located on the KTH Campus and was originally the site of Sweden's first nuclear reactor, the R1 research reactor. The now decommissioned and dismantled nuclear reactor still breathes research and experimentation. Today, the Reactor Hall at KTH is used as a creative meeting place and serves as a mixture of museum, cultural center, seminar room, studio and lab.

The KTH Reactor Hall - a unique venue

The KTH Reactor Hall used to house the R1 research reactor, Sweden's first nuclear reactor, which is now shut down and decommissioned.

The KTH Reactor Hall is located just over 25 metres below ground level on the KTH Campus and is accessible by lift or stairs. The KTH Reactor Hall is unique with its history  and its environment with grey concrete walls, grid patterns in the ceiling and walls and no telephone coverage. The coordinate system on the ceiling is a remnant of the radiation measurements taken before the reactor was shut down.

Concrete pit with a history

In the centre of the impressive space is an open area, a large hole in the floor in the shape of a concrete pit with railings around it, where the reactor used to be located. The history behind the pit and the space itself contributes to the special character of the Reactor Hall at KTH.

Coordinate system for measurement of radioactive radiation

In the 1980s, measurements were made to check that no radioactive radiation remained in the KTH Reactor Hall. The results showed that the radiation was below the applicable limit values and the facility was thus cleared by the Swedish Radiation Protection Authority.
