Ask Lucas a question

Why did you choose this master’s programme at KTH?

After graduating as a chemical engineer in Barcelona, I felt like I needed to leave my comfort zone and move abroad to an international environment. I have always known that I wanted to be part of the global warming solution, and this programme is perfect for a technical yet practical approach. Chemical Engineering for Energy and Environment has a holistic scope with countless opportunities, which allows each student to fit their specific interests and needs. Additionally, I believe that studying in a well-known institution such as KTH will be a booster in my career opportunities.

How do studies at KTH differ from your previous studies?

Studies at KTH are notably different from my previous studies in Spain. Firstly, every semester is divided into 2 different periods, making 4 in total. Only 2 or 3 subjects are taught every period, where you can completely deepen into the subject, allowing a better understanding of the topic. Secondly, it has a very practical and collaborative approach, having group projects as one of the pillars of every subject. You do not have the feeling you are being taught theoretical knowledge that you will never apply in a real-life scenario. Finally, the international environment is amazing. You have the chance to meet people from many different cultures and backgrounds, which makes the experience even more enriching.

What are some of your favourite courses so far?

So far, I have found two courses particularly interesting: Chemical Reaction Engineering and Ideation – Creating your own company. The course on Chemical Reaction Engineering provides a comprehensive overview of the essential knowledge and distinctive qualities that set chemical engineers apart from other engineering disciplines. It is not only about ideal reactors. On the contrary, it's taken one step further, covering heterogeneous and non-ideal reactors. It is a difficult course; however, it is extremely rewarding, with an exponential learning curve. In contrast, the Ideation course introduces a whole new perspective. It is a different way of thinking, a first step towards entrepreneurship and its connotation. I see myself as an entrepreneur one day, putting into practice my entrepreneurial and chemical engineering skills.

How is student life in Stockholm?

Student life in Stockholm is both enjoyable and enlightening. There are always activities going on, opportunities for everyone to find their place. Students actively organize various activities, parties, and events, ensuring a vibrant and engaging atmosphere. Furthermore, you can join student associations like THS, which allow you to practice your existing hobbies or explore new ones at affordable prices (and many are even free!).

Despite being the capital of Sweden, Stockholm is manageable, meaning all your friends will live relatively close. Additionally, Stockholm is a beautiful city, with abundant opportunities for outdoor activities, which, personally, it is one of the things I enjoy the most. Nevertheless, the experience in Stockholm varies with each season. During winter, although there are limited daylight hours and cold temperatures, numerous fun activities are still available, such as skiing, ice skating, witnessing the northern lights, cooking with roommates, etc. On the contrary, the weather during summer is AMAZING! Everyone is outside in the sun, going to the sea and having picnics in green areas.

What would you like to say to students thinking of choosing KTH for master’s studies?

For students thinking of choosing KTH for their master's studies, I would highly recommend doing it without hesitation. It is an enriching experience, filled with opportunities, adventures, and new people. Life at KTH extends beyond the study programme and subjects. It offers a whole new dimension with numerous opportunities for self-development. It goes without saying, but KTH is a renowned institution worldwide, which will enhance your professional prospects!
