Master's programme in Medical Biotechnology

Hi Fabiana, what are you working on at the moment?

I’m currently working as a consultant at PlantVision. It’s my first job since graduating.

What is a regular day like at your job?

I am a consultant so a regular day depends on which company I have been assigned to at the time. However, general to all companies, as I work on projects within regulated businesses (usually GMP: Good Manufacturing Practice) there is company-specific training that needs to be conducted and instructions that need to be read and followed (SOPs: Standard Operating Procedures). There are also meetings, for example, regarding project schedules, risk assessments focusing on GMP and SHE (SHE: Safety, Health and Environment), following up action lists, communicating with suppliers and stakeholders, reviewing project documents and drawings, planning upcoming activities and coordination of project resources.

Why did you choose this programme at KTH?

I wanted a programme that would give me a wide range of job opportunities and becoming an engineer would fulfil that ambition. I chose the master’s programme in Biotechnology at KTH because I like biology and the institute has a well-known brand, which offers advantages when starting a career as an engineer.

Are there any insights or knowledge you acquired during your studies that have been particularly useful for you in your career?

Knowledge of how to receive and digest a lot of information, being able to organise it and extract the important parts. Also, solving problems on a step-by-step basis.

What was the best aspect of your studies at KTH?

Being able to do one semester abroad through the exchange programme: participating in the introduction weeks (mottagningen); being given an introduction to how things work and where they are at the KTH campus. Also, getting to know my course mates in the same time frame before the real work started.

What is your best memory from your time at the university?

The introduction weeks, my university friends and the exchange at NTU in Singapore.

What are your plans for the future?

I still don’t know what I want to do when I grow up. 😊 But I will continue to pursue and do things that challenge me.

What would you want to say to a student who was thinking of applying for this programme?

You are not limited to becoming a PhD student after completing the biotechnology programme. There will also be other opportunities to pursue.
