Melissa finds both modernity and tradition in Stockholm

Melissa Martinez Hernandez, from Colombia, is studying the Master's programme in Sustainable Technology at KTH. Melissa thinks that students at KTH have a lot of freedom and that Stockholm is a city where it is possible to find both modernity and tradition.

What made you decide to start studying at KTH?
It is a prestigious university and the relevance of the Master’s programme was of high value for me.

How did you decide which programme to choose?
My interests on environmental science and sustainability and the city of Stockholm where my main reasons when I decided to study Sustainable Technology at KTH.  

What do you see as the greatest aspects of your programme?
Broad perspective and up to date knowledge and understanding of complexity of environmental issues also the opportunity to growth as engineer

How do studies here at KTH differ in comparison to your previous experience?
 
At KTH is the students build their own way to knowledge. The students manage their own time and teachers have the role of supervisors and guides. It gives you a lot of freedom.

What are your impressions of Stockholm and Sweden?
Stockholm is a city where it is possible to find modernity and tradition. It is safe and the transportation works almost perfect all the time.

Is there something about life in Stockholm and Sweden that has surprised you?
Swedes love and have a lot of passion for nature.

Would you like to recommend anything special to do while in Stockholm?
Stockholm is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, especially in summer where water from the Baltic Sea and the lake Mälaren surrounds the city. All activities associated with water are highly recommended!

Could you describe a regular day as a student at KTH?
A regular day at KTH starts with lectures in the morning and group meetings or library time after they are done. A break for a cup of coffee and friends happens a lot, it’s called fika in Swedish. Sometimes we continue and have a beer later on. 

What do you want to do after you have received your degree here at KTH?
I would like to work as sustainability manager. I want to build processes towards sustainability

Is there any advice you would like to give others that will live in Stockholm and study at KTH in the future?
Be prepared to take part of lectures and discussions. Try to be up to date with subjects regarding your master and do not be afraid of participating. Remember that this is the chance to grow as a professional and KTH is the best opportunity to learn from your mistakes and to become better. Try to be focused on what you want to learn and consider taking advantage of language courses.
