Fiber/fiber and fiber/polymer interactions in molded cellulose fiber materials

Wood fibers are complex, porous assemblies of nanoscale cellulose fibrils, with supporting polymers in the form of hemicelluloses and lignin. In order to utilize the potential of the wood fiber cell wall in biocomposites we need a better understanding of the fibers themselves, the fiber/fiber and fiber/polymer interactions.

In this project, cellulose model surfaces are used through contact mechanics in order to clarify the importance of molecular interactions on macroscopic properties.
