Mattias Nyberg is the new Adjunct Professor at Mechatronics

Published May 24, 2013

Mattias comes from Scania, where he worked as an Expert Engineer at Electrical Systems predevelopment and becomes adjunct professor of Dependable Control Systems.

This new chair is closely related to the research focus of the Mechatronics division and is also fully in-line with the strengthened collaboration between KTH and Scania through the arena for strategic partnership. Mattias Nyberg is currently Expert Engineer at Electrical Systems Predevelopment at Scania (and formerly Technical Manager at Powertrain Control Systems Development).  For a number of years, he has been actively involved with KTH through ICES, the Innovative Centre for Embedded Systems ( www.ices.kth.se ), as part of the focus group on Safety, Security, Robustness and Diagnosis.  In addition, in 2012, Mattias initiated a collaborative research project, Espresso - Efficient Safety for Products based on Embedded Systems and Software.

The main characteristics of Dependable Control (aka “the science of failures”) are: Reliability, Availability, Maintainability and Safety. The professorship, which started in April 2013, will focus on theory and methods for development of control systems to achieve these characteristics in the context of mechatronic systems.

Both dependability and control theory are broad areas, and academic research to date has tended to study them in isolation. One challenge for Mattias in his new role is therefore to bridge this gap, building and driving research projects, engaging the various academic groups and industries for whom dependable control is essential. Research areas of particular interest include automotive control applications, model based techniques, architecture, critical systems, diagnosis, fault management and prognostics.
