He served as Head of the Department of Electrical Engineering between 2009 and 2017. Previously he has also served as vice dean of education at KTH between 2001 and 2004 as well as Dean of the KTH South Campus between 2002 and 2004.

Born in Gävle in 1961, Dr. Östlund received his M.Sc. and Ph.D degrees from KTH in 1985 and 1992, respectively. His Ph.D. thesis was entitled, “A Primary Switched Converter System for Traction Applications.” In 1993, Dr. Östlund became Assistant Professor of Electric Power Engineering, and in 1999 he was promoted to associate professor. One year later, he was appointed professor of Electric Power Engineering, specializing in electric railway traction. Today, he teaches courses in electrical machines and drives, power electronics and electric railway traction.

His primary research interests are power electronics and drives with an emphasis on propulsion and power supplies for electric railway traction and electric vehicles. Until 2009 he served as director for the KTH Railway Group, a multidisciplinary research center founded by Swedish rail industries and train operators, the Swedish transport administration, and KTH.
