Lines of research

My research comprises the installation and nanostructuring of thin films in the field of nanoscience and materials for information technology. The lines of research are: Hybrid nanomaterials for energy and information technology, in situ and operando methods, microfluidics. This comprises:

  • Nanostructured (bio)polymer materials
  • Magnetic nanoparticles
  • Metal-polymer nanocomposites

Self-assembly plays a crucial role in nanostructuring. Therefore, I am using small- and wide-angle X-ray scattering to observe nanostructuring in real-time by so-called in-situ experiments. The range of deposition methods for such thin films ranges from spray coating of liquid solutions to vacuum deposition on various metallic and organic films. All these methods are applied in process technology for mobile phones, data storage and photovoltaics. My aim is to elucidate their nanostructure-function relationship, e.g. relating their nanostructure and morphology with their optical properties.

In detail, I am interested in:

  • Nanoparticle film formation
  • Cellulose as basis for advanced materials
  • Sputter deposition of organic and metallic nanostructures
  • Spray deposition and solution casting
  • Creation of hybrid nanostructures
  • Characterization of nanostructures via atomic force microscopy, ellipsometry, spectroscopy and contact angle measurements and X-ray scattering
