Thesis review - graded essay in Theory of Science and Scientific Methods

The purpose of this exercise is to give you training in scientific writing. You will practice both writing in a popular science style and writing in a more critical review style. You will work with an old Master's thesis: project list

Your essay should be in two parts

  1. The first part will be an easily readable summary of the thesis intended for a lay-person probably without deep knowledge of computer science. You should give a brief explanation of what the thesis is about and a discussion of its possible interest for a general public.
This part should be one page long.
  2. The second part will be a critical review of the thesis. Some years ago, the requirements concerning scientific contents and format were different from current requirements. Your task is to review the thesis and give scientific comments that would help the author make the thesis comply with current standards.
KTH has as yet not translated these standards to English but Anna-Karin Högfeldt at the ECE school has been kind enough to lend us the informal translations she uses in her course:
You should analyze the thesis and try to identify the scientific methods, principles and concepts used in the thesis. You should also suggest improvements that could be made, for instance by writing a pragraph to be inserted into the text.
You should comment on the following points
      • References [quality, availability, relevance, etc. ]
      • Research questions [clearly stated, hypotheses, etc.]
      • Scientific theory [truth, explanation, bias, skepticism, ethics, etc.]
      • Methodology [HD, statistics, experiments, etc.]
      • Conclusions [justified, research questions answered, etc.]

This part should be four pages long.

Formal requirements

  • Your essay should be titled "Scientific comments on the Master's Thesis xxx by yyy. Reviewer: zzz."
  • First part: one page
  • Second part: four pages
  • Font size 10pt
  • Your essay must be submitted to KTH-Social no later than January 18, 2016. Upload your file as a pdf (other formats will not be accepted).

Grading

The grading is A-F according to the following criteria.

E: The summary and review have the correct format, are written in clear English in an appropriate style. The reviewer shows clear understanding of the thesis and the course basics.

C: The reviewer also gives comments that show broad knowledge in scientific methods and suggests relevant improvements.

A: An interesting and thought-provoking summary followed by a discerning and creative review. Comments and improvements show deep insight in the theory of science.

Hi! First of all, Merry Christmas!

Questions regarding Part 2:

  • Is it fine to write the report in LateX?
  • Is it ok for this part to be less/more than four pages?
    • If it is ok, how much less/more can we write?

Thanks!

/Brian

  • LaTeX is an excellent choice. The pdflatex command (Linux) will create a pdf.
  • Hand in no more than four pages but no less than three (including references and figures) for the second part.

"Your task is to review the thesis and give scientific comments that would help the author make the thesis comply with current standards."
Where can we find what the old/new standards were/are?

commented 7 January 2016

Apparently the above hasn't been answered for 9 days so maybe it's gotten lost somewhere. Asking again.

Assistant commented 8 January 2016

Sorry, we have had trouble finding a translation of the standards. An informal translation will be available shortly!

I'm still confused by this. Are the linked criteria old standards (Master) vs new standards (Civilingenjör) - or vice versa, I guess - or are they the new standards only? If the latter, could we get access to the old standards, so we know what differences to look for?

On a very related matter, I assume the essays have been cherry-picked as essays which conformed to the old standards, but would not pass under the new standards?

commented 12 January 2016

Could we get a response to Sean's questions? The deadline is approaching and I'm still not sure how the criteria are supposed to be used.

I don't know about everyone else, but I've been waiting for a response before I start working on the second part, since I want to do it properly. Now there's less than a week left and it still hasn't been cleared up.

commented 12 January 2016

I guess it would be better if the deadline is extended by a week after clearing out the criteria.

commented 12 January 2016

An extension would be a lot better. Considering there is also an exam this Saturday.... I think it is difficult for everyone with the current deadline.

commented 13 January 2016

We're sort of in the dark here.

commented 14 January 2016

Can we get the final version of the translation? Also, since most of us have an exam on Saturday, and the criteria is still not clear, an extension of deadline will really help.

Teacher commented 14 January 2016

There is no need for a translation of the old standards. "Your task is to review the thesis and give scientific comments that would help the author make the thesis comply with current standards. "

There is also no need for a translation different from the one given - this translation is good enough.

The dead-line was set a long time ago and I see no reason for a change now. (In fact, several students have already handed in good-quality essays.)

I don't see why you would need the old standards at all. As the description says: The task is to see how well the essay complies to the current standards.

commented 14 January 2016

Thank you for your answer. However, it seems all the likes on the previous comments have disappeared yet again. What happened this time?

Assistant commented 15 January 2016

Good question. Any hypotheses?

commented 15 January 2016

Observation 1: once a teacher enters a discussion on the DA2210 social page, all likes disappear.

Observation 2: in courses IK2218, DD2440 and DD2380, there are comments (by students) with a likes that have not disappeared when a teacher has joined a conversation.

I am only addressing this because the likes emphasize the amount of support different standpoints have in a discussion. If the likes disappear, especially once a discussion is over, future readers can no longer get an accurate idea of the situation. Note that I still do respect that you have the final say in these matters.

Assistant commented 15 January 2016

Observation 3: As a teacher in a course I can remove my own like but no other likes.

commented 15 January 2016

Observation 4. Kth Social is buggy and terrible.

commented 21 January 2016

When can we expect the grading of essays to be finished?

commented 6 February 2016

I also wonder approximately when the grading of the essays will be finished...

commented 8 February 2016

I just emailed Johan Karlander and he said he thinks we should get our grades later today!

Assistant commented 9 February 2016

If you recieved an Fx on your essay you will find a comment under Assignments:Essay with further instructions.
