Project

The projects are performed in groups of 4-5 students, and presented with a short written report, as well as an oral poster presentation, May 20, 9.00 - 12.00 in room Fantum, Lindstedtsvägen 24, level 5.

Due to the large number of students, we will have three separate sessions with the following distribution of groups:

9.00-10.00 Groups 1, 5, 6, 14, 17, 20, 21, 24

10.00-11.00 Groups 2, 4, 7, 8, 10, 13, 16, 22

11.00-12.00 Groups 3, 9, 11, 12, 15, 18, 19, 23, 25

Presence is mandatory during your group's 1h session. Each student in the group should be prepared to present every part of the project. During the session, you will take turns presenting, so that you get a chance to visit the other posters.

Material (tape etc) for putting up your poster will be provided.

The groups are formed based on grades of Assignments 1 and 2. This is to assure that the groups are as homogeneous as possible in terms of ambition level in the course. The groups are now published in the page VT 2016 ir16 > Project groups in the menu to the left.

Next step is to select project. The available project proposals with the assigned groups are listed below:

  1. Social Network Fact Receiver (Findwise) Groups 14, 16, 18, 20, 22, 25
  2. Tell Me a Story (Findwise) Groups 1, 4, 23, 24
  3. Outfit Selector (Findwise) Groups 8, 15, 21
  4. Video Search (Artificial Experience) Groups 2, 9
  5. Social Media Powered Recommendations (Artificial Experience) Groups 6, 7, 11
  6. Sentiment Analysis in Speech with Relation to Brands (Gavagai) Groups 5, 10
  7. Cross-Cultural Media Monitoring (Gavagai) Group 19
  8. Wikipedia Information (FOI) Groups 3, 12, 13, 17

Possibly, one or two more projects are added to the list during the next week - keep an eye on the list! By Tuesday March 29, 15.00/3pm each of the 25 groups should send me an email where you state the three projects (in order of preference) in which your group is most interested.

We will in due time also publish a schedule for the poster session.

Grading

The projects are graded according to a number of criteria.

Compulsory

  1. Structured the problem formulation, and made specifications of the functionality of an Information Retrieval algorithm to solve the problem posed in the project formulation.
  2. Developed an Information Retrieval algorithm that solves the problem.
  3. Implemented that algorithm and tested it on reasonably realistic data.
  4. Handed in a report according to the instructions below before the poster session.
  5. Presented the results to the other students with a poster according to the instructions below.

Additional

  1. The solution to the problem is novel in some respect (i.e., it has not been published before in a book, report, article or paper).
  2. The poster presentation is clear and understandable to another student who has not read the report or references in it.
  3. The report is clear, complete and technically correct.
  4. The English in the report is grammatically correct.

Grades are obtained based on how many of these criteria are fulfilled:

Project Assignment GradeFulfillment of Criteria
A All compulsory, all additional criteria satisfied
B All compulsory, 3 additional criteria satisfied
C All compulsory, 2 additional criteria satisfied
D All compulsory, 1 additional criteria satisfied
E All compulsory, no additional criteria satisfied
Fx One or more of compulsory criteria 1, 2, 3 missing
F One or more of compulsory criteria 4, 5 missing

In the event of grade F, the poster presentation has to be redone to satisfy compulsory criteria 4, 5, and the report corrected to satisfy compulsory criteria 1, 2, 3. In the event of grade Fx, the report has to be corrected to satisfy compulsory criteria 1, 2, 3, to reach grade E.

Instructions for Written Report

The report should be at most 10 pages, with 12 pt font and about 2.5 cm margins. It should be written in such a way that it is possible to recreate the experiments described and get the same results.

The report (in pdf format) should be sent via email to Hedvig Kjellström before 9.00, May 20.

It should also be apparent what the authors did (what is new) and what others have done before (what can be found in the references). Each statement or claim that comes from another report has to be followed by a reference to that work.

The report should be organized according to the following:

  • Title, authors, short abstract that describes the idea, results, and main conclusions
  • Background/Introduction
  • Previous/Related Work
  • Method - can be several sections
  • Experiments/Results
  • Conclusions/Discussion
  • List of References.

Instructions for Poster Presentation

At the poster presentation, the groups present their work to each other, and to anyone at CSC who is interested. You are very welcome to invite your friends!

The "poster" could consist of 8-12 A4 papers, which have a design suitable to put up on a wall. This means that the font should not be too small, and that there should not be too much text. The poster should contain information about the problem, the method used to solve it, and the most important results.

With the help of the poster, you should present your work in not more than 5-10 minutes. After that, you can go into details, and discuss with the people listening. The idea with the poster format is that it opens up for interaction much more than a traditional presentation. It is quite common to have poster sessions at research conferences.

If you need to use a color printer, talk to Hedvig Kjellström before 12.00, May 18.

You are now being distributed into project groups based on your performance in Assignment 1 and 2. I will by default only consider those that presented at least Assignment 1.

If you want to do the project, and have done both assignments but do not yet presented them, send me an email! I will then assign you to a group. (I have got one request already.)

Similarly, if you have done an assignment but would not like to do the project, send me an email.

The deadline for joining a group (or signing off) is Sunday March 13, 23.59. On Monday, I will publish the project groups, and then it is too late to join if you are not in a group.

All the best,

/Hedvig

Hej,

Do we need to sign up somewhere if we intend to do the project?

Best,

Sugandh

Lärare kommenterade 13 mars 2016

No, everyone who has presented an assignment will be assigned a group by default.

kommenterade 15 mars 2016

Where are the groups published?

Lärare kommenterade 15 mars 2016

The project groups are now published on the homepage (at a subpage VT 2016 ir16 only readable to students of this course).

If you can not read the Project groups page it means that you not registered for this course in LADOK. In that case, ask your program administrator to register you. Rest assured that you will be contacted by your group mates before the end of this week, otherwise contact me.

Moreover, if you are having trouble getting in contact with your group via email, contact me.

The project descriptions will be published soon, back with more info as soon as I have collected all the project descriptions!

The project proposals are now published on the homepage's Project page. By Tuesday March 22, 15.00/3pm each of the 25 groups should send me an email where you state the three projects (in order of preference) in which your group is most interested.

I will then match groups with projects so that as many groups as possible get their first choice, while spreading the projects out evenly!

Hedvig, isn't it possible to postpone the deadline for projects proposal? I think that everyone will be traveling during the Easter break, making it hard to organize anything.

Lärare kommenterade 20 mars 2016

Fine by me. What are other students' opinions? Would you like more time to select, or would you like to get started?

Hedvig, an extension for the deadline for projects proposal would be great!

kommenterade 21 mars 2016

Several people are on vacation making it difficult to contact them at all. It would be much appreciated.

Lärare kommenterade 21 mars 2016

OK - the deadline for selecting projects is postponed one week, to Tuesday March 29, 15.00/3pm!

Lärare kommenterade 29 mars 2016

The proposals are now assigned to groups!

Hi Hedvig,

Are we allowed to reuse existing open source search engines like lucene?

Lärare kommenterade 30 mars 2016

Absolutely!

kommenterade 15 april 2016

Hi Hedvig.

We are assigned project 8, and we just want to clarify some details. Is it ok if we use an API to search Wikipedia or should we index parts of it?

Lärare kommenterade 18 april 2016

Hi Viktor,

You can use any solution!

kommenterade 16 maj 2016

Hi Hedvig,

Should every person in the project be part of the poster presentation, or can we structure it freely?

Lärare kommenterade 16 maj 2016

All group members should present during the poster session! You should all be well prepared enough to explain the project all by yourselves.

During the session, you should take turns presenting, so that you also can go around and see the other posters.

Lärare kommenterade 16 maj 2016

Schedule for the presentation is now published on the homepage! You are only required to be at your own group's session.

kommenterade 17 maj 2016

Hello Hedvig,

What counts towards the 10 pages of the report? Is this excluding or including front page, references etc?

Lärare kommenterade 17 maj 2016

Incl references, but excl frontpage - if you wish to have that, it is not compulsory.

kommenterade 17 maj 2016

Thank you for the quick reply, but wouldn't

  • Title, authors, short abstract that describes the idea, results, and main conclusions

count as a front page?

Lärare kommenterade 17 maj 2016

It can also be organized as a journal paper - the title and abstract covers half a page. If you have a front page, you can put title and authors there. But not abstract.

kommenterade 17 maj 2016

ok, thank you.

kommenterade 17 maj 2016

Does the page count include appendices? We'd like to include additional results for the curious reader, but they're not really necessary for the report per se.

Lärare kommenterade 17 maj 2016

You are welcome to include appendices! However, they will not be considered in the grading.

Lärare kommenterade 20 maj 2016

Thanks for all your excellent posters! Someone forgot a grey plastic folder, it is in my office!

Lärare kommenterade 14 juni 2016

Johan Boye and Hedvig Kjellström have now graded all projects according to the grading criteria on the project page (VT 2016 ir16 > Project).

The results appear in Rapp now, and should appear in a couple of days in Ladok. If you want to have a clarification on how we evaluated, please send me an email! Note that the grade is mostly determined by the assignments - in order for the project to raise the overall grade, the project grade has to be two steps higher than the assignment grade.

kommenterade 15 juni 2016

Hi,

Some of us students were registered in the course in such a way that results do not show up in rapp.  Is it possible to get access to them somewhere else?

Lärare kommenterade 16 juni 2016

Absolutely, will email all of you!
