During this workshop we will use PLEX cards to generate multiple design ideas.

• Bring 10 sketchy conceptual ideas (worked through since ideation workshop), if you don't think one of the ideas are equally as interesting, you need to find new ones!

The critique session is for sharing ideas and getting feedback, so try and be as specific as you can about what you want feedback on.

What did you find most interesting in their work? What do you find most promising in their work overall, from what you saw so far?
What would you focus on next if you were them?

In the hands of children: exploring the use of mobile phone functionality in casual play settings

Self organised trip to a place relevant for your project. Think about how your different ideas would work in this context? Take inspiration! What seems to be working well? What do the kids do? What do they play? What seems to be interesting/engaging/important to the kids?

As Eva-Lotta mentioned, the terrain and landscape might tell a lot about where the kids actually play, e.g. traces of play in the bushes or if an area just seams to be less used.

One option might be to go to a "miljonprogram" area.

Remember:

• Present your self and what you are doing whenever approaching so people knwo why you are there and what's your intentions. (students from KTH, IxD course, project)
• Photographing is sensitive, especially when it involves children. Photograph STUFF, take notes about children!
• If you need to talk to children, ask their parents first.
• Kids tends to say what they think that you want them to say.

This session we will introduce and discuss the requirements for online presentations in personal portfolios, the fifth project in this course.

What is responsible design when it comes to physical and digital play? You have two preparatory tasks:

1. Discuss in your new group and select three issues you would find interesting to explore further and take responsibility for in your project. Motivate why you find these issues interesting and important.

2.Find one or more cases of what you would consider “irresponsible" in the domain of designing for children and play - it could be the design of physical playgrounds, but also computer games, toys and applications designed for and/or used by children in play settings. In what ways do you find it irresponsible? Ideas for possible redesigns?

Unfortunately SVT needed to cancel, I am trying to reschedule this for a later occasion. 

With short notice I managed to convince Martin Jonsson to come and share some projects related to kids and play. Martin is a researcher at KTH and Mobile Life. 

During the week:

- select one main issue to focus on in your design
- search and read up on relevant research (scholar.google.com or acm.org/dl), at least a couple of research papers that in some way address the issues you will work with
- Sketch 3 detailed alternatives ways that you believe in to adress your issue of choice, the sketches should explain in detail the interaction including how you intend the interaction to begin. It may be in the form of a redesign of existing concepts or concepts developed within the explorative theme, as well as, making something new that focuses on your issue of choice.

During the crit:
- Present and motivate your issue of choice and 3 alternative design proposals (sketches) that you think could addresses it
- main insights from research
- 10 min presentations will using the projector

During the week:

- Figure out one way to continue with a single design solution based on your feedback from the crit. It may be to continue and improve on one of your ideas, a combination of ideas, or something emerging from the feedback as a more interesting path for further development.
- Continue to develop your idea by making a prototype

During the crit:
- Present your prototype and the interaction with it using what ever medium you require (e.g. miniature model or video prototype)
- 10 min presentations

We brief the commercial design task ahead of the exam weeks, but there is no need to start with it until next week

During the week:

• Get feedback on your design from external peers. If you know anyone within the selected group of people that might of course be of interest. You might also consult experts, otherwise knowledgeable people like grown up people within the target group, organisations, researchers, etc.


• Continue to refine your ideas based on crit feedback and feedback from external peers

During the crit:

• Present your final design 


• 5 min presentations

    -Assess your ideas by: checking similar solutions, asking around, 6 thinking hats, sketching, read product     reviews, and thinking about what you really really like

We will work in small groups and make shore that your ideas gets discussed throughly and that everyone gets constructive feedback and suggestions for improving their business model, concept, scenario.

Prepare a short selling pitch of your idea describing:

• The concept
• The value you are aiming to provide for your customers
• A scenario describing how the concept creates value for the customer segment
• Your business model

Remember that improving your business might mean that you have to rethink your idea or concept, or even abandoning it if it seems problematic or you realise that it will be tricky to make it work. Also, business does not always care for your darlings ;-)

Lidia is the UX manager at Schibsted Digital Media, based in Stockholm. Before joining Schibsted Lidia spent 4 years at Google, first on the AdSense UX team and then as the UX research lead for the Emerging Markets team. Lidia has 13+ years of experience in UX. She has an undergraduate in Psychology and a Masters and PhD in Human-Computer Interaction.

This week you really need to make it work! A good way to sanitise your idea is to test it in action. However, you rarely need to prototype everything, so focus on the main interactive elements. You need to get the design (visual and interaction) together so that we understand to 100 percent how it works in action and that it actually will work. Including the details of the interaction such as sliding, animations, feedback, etc. 

If your are using GPS stuff, get out there with the GPS and maps and play it and figure out how it should be done! (many of the ideas that I heard could easily be prototyped with Google Maps, images, and a tiny bit if javascript). If your doing flower arrangements or rockstar stuff you could put probably put something together with Unity or Flash. And so on...

We split into 2 groups providing 20-25 minutes per group:

Present a "finished" design of your interactive product, including:

• Name of the product


• Main concept


• Interaction scenario(s)


• Visual identity, logo etc


• prototype it, showing flow of interaction

Presentations for the whole class

Present your updated and improved prototype with a nice appealing design and interaction. It should also be clear that it is well adjusted to work with your business model.

Make a brochure (pitch) that complements your prototype and in a selling way explains your idea. Print a bunch of copies that could be distributed in class

Try to have photos and texts ready for your 3 first projects so you can get feedback, these could each be prepared together with your partners.
