The course has several assignments throughout the term, including two intermediate "checkpoints" where progress is evaluated in order to continue. Students have the opportunity to perform their thesis work in companies, hospitals or industry, as well as within KTH. Each student receives group supervision from a KTH scientist and each project is assigned a KTH supervisor.

The course was started by Mats Nilsson in 2013 and developed by Peta Sjölander since then. Mats and Peta were examiners in earlier years, since 2016 the examiner is Sebastiaan Meijer.
