This course covers the most important polymerization reactions, focusing on their reaction mechanisms and kinetic aspects. Topics include step-growth polymerization, free radical and ionic chain polymerization, ring-opening polymerization, insertion and controlled addition polymerization. Each method presentation will cover the full spectrum from the theoretical understanding of detailed experimental procedures to examples of functional materials prepared by the specific method. Each lecture is closely integrated with class exercises and laboratory exercises.
Polymerizations are key reactions in a huge range of materials design processes for applications spanning over the entire width of products, from high tech to bulk consumer goods: polymers for the automotive, electronic, construction, packaging, textile, pharmaceutical, optical, and biomedical fields just to name a few.
