The opening class will be held together with students from the Energy Policy Design course. The idea is to present an overview of the energy policy in a climate change context. The lecture attempts a brainstorm to answer important questions such as:

• What is the current status of the global energy and climate agenda?
• What does it need to be changed?
• How much does it need to be changed?
• How fast can it be changed?
• How can we achieve a change?

Guest Lecturer: Professor Michael Tjernström from the Department of Metereology and Bert Bolin Center for Climate Research at Stockholm University.

The lecture will discuss why is it so difficult to know for sure the impacts of climate change and its related issues.

Guest Lecturer: PhD Candidate Fabian Levihn at KTH's Industrial Dynamics Division. His main interest is the ongoing restructuring and change within the energy business caused by energy security and climate change issues.

The lecture will present three important economical concepts to climate change:

• externalities
• market failure
• policy measures

Guest Lecturer: PhD Candidate Francis X. Johnson.

He is a Senior Research Fellow in Energy and Climate at the Stockholm Environment Institute (SEI) since 2009 and Research Fellow since 1999. From 1991-1998, he was a Senior Research Associate in the Energy Analysis Program at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (USA). He has twenty years of experience in economic and environmental analysis of biofuels, bioenergy strategies, climate mitigation, and energy efficiency. He has served as an expert evaluator or advisor to UNIDO, FAO, DG-Energy (European Commission) and the Environment Committee of the European Parliament. He has recently co-edited a book on the Food vs. Fuel issue (ZED books) and is co-editor of a forthcoming book on bioenergy from sugarcane in Africa.

Professor Mark Howells

Mark Howells is professor in Energy Systems Analysis. The field of research covers energy systems analysis, methodological development and modelling of energy systems in global and regional perspectives with the aim to develop decision support systems for decision makers.

NOTE: The seminar will be held from 15:00 to 17:00. The first couple of hours (from 13:00 to 15:00) students should prepare their questions for the companies related to Climate Change Mitigation.

Guest speakers representing Swedish Innovative SMEs will discuss with students about their experiences in running a competitive business and dealing with climate change mitigation initiatives.

The panel will be mediated by Ms. Malin Olovsson, Ph.D. student within the department of Business Development and Entrepreneurship at INDEK.

The seminar is organised by the division of Energy and Climate Studies  in cooperation with the division of Business Development and Entrepreneurship at INDEK/KTH. It is also organised within the frame of the course Climate Change Mitigation Tools (MJ2470) and Energy Policy (MJ2473).

The seminar is mandatory for students attending those courses. However, it is open for students attending other courses at KTH, who are interested in issues related to energy policy and climate change mitigation in the business context.
