Course Selection

This information is directed to exchange students. Please note that other course selection rules apply for double degree students.

As an exchange student (this does not apply to Architecture, see more information below) you have to take at least 50% of your courses from the School of the Built Environment. All courses with a course code that starts with an “A” belong to School of Architecture and the Built Environment. Please observe that you cannot take courses from the School of Architecture. You can choose the other 50% of the courses from many different fields at KTH (or from the Built Environment). 30 credits represent full time studies at KTH. Courses in Swedish language and/or society can be excluded from the 30 ECTS credit maximum.

You can find the courses in the Course and Programme Directory. We recommend  that you have a look at the courses included in one of the programmes when you select courses, if you are interested in a particular programme/study field.

To find the timetable for the courses you are taking at KTH, please visit the Schedule Search. Please note that the schedules of the courses may collide, so it is wise to check their schedule before you decide on which courses to take. Some collisions may be manageable, but to what degree is for you to decide for yourself. If you take courses from one programme only, the courses are however usually separated.

You can find more information about the course selection here.

Architecture

As an exchange student studying Architecture (this does not apply to Sustainable Urban Planning and Design) you will follow a predetermined course package of 30 ECTS credits per semester. Students stay in the same studio for the whole year. All courses are compulsory and it is therefore not possible for exchange students in architecture to do a degree project at KTH or choose courses at another school or department at KTH.

Please note that KTH and your home university needs to have a specific exchange agreement within the subject area architecture, for you to be able to take courses in architecture at KTH.

Swedish language courses

We encourage you to learn Swedish during your stay at KTH, to get better acquainted with Swedish people and society and to perhaps be able to follow the technical courses held in Swedish. Therefore, we offer language courses in Swedish with no fee for our exchange students. The courses during the semesters are taught at the main campus every second week. Most exchange students begin with Swedish level A1 (beginner’ level). If you have previous training in Swedish and want to start at a higher level, you have to do a placement test to confirm your level of proficiency before you can get registered for the course.

Change courses

It is possible to change a few courses within one week after the courses have begun. Fill in the following online form if you want to change courses: www.kth.se/form/changecourses.
