Rummets och arbetets ljus i tre bibliotek

Stockholms stadsbibliotek 1928, Norrköpings stadsbibliotek 1971 och Helsingfors centrumbiblioteket Ode, 2018.

 Avhandlingsarbetet Det lysande och det belysta syftar till att utveckla nya metoder för ljusbehandling utifrån ett gestaltningsperspektiv och med utgångspunkt i dagens arkitekturutmaningar. Avhandlingen kombinerar praktikorienterad forskning med arkitekturhistoria, belysningsteori och belysningsteknik för att bidra till ljusets gestaltningsteori samt till konkreta metoder och verktyg i designprocessen. 

Seminarietexten som är ett utkast till en artikel bygger på fallstudier av ljusbehandlingen av dagsljus och belysning i tre biblioteksbyggnader – Stockholms stadsbibliotek (1928), Norrköpings stadsbibliotek (1971) och Helsingfors centrumbibliotek Ode (2018). Tillkomsttiden för biblioteken placerar dem i varsin samhällelig kontext med olika sociala, konstnärliga, byggnads- och belysningstekniska förutsättningar. Ett av undersökningens syften är att spåra de faktorer som i respektive fall påverkat ljusgestaltningen och ringa in skiften i byggnaders ljusutformning under det förra århundradet.  

Biblioteket används i studien som typologi för att undersöka utvecklingen av såväl rummets ljusutformning som ljus utformat för arbete. Arbetsljusets uppgift i bibliotek ger en inblick i hur aktuella regler och riktlinjer för ljus tillämpats i de tre olika fallen. Artikeln visar hur belysningsteorin, genom sin inriktning på arbetets ljus, över tid medverkat till ett synideal på bekostnad av rummets ljus.

De tre fallstudierna exemplifierar hur utvecklingen av belysningstekniken och dess ljuskällor möjliggjort ett intensivare, jämnare och mer styrbart ljus. De tre biblioteken uppvisar skilda förhållningssätt till kontrasthantering och rörelse. Ljusbehandlingen utgår i det första fallet ifrån kontraster mellan ljus och mörker kopplade till besökarens rörelse och tillkom under en tid då dagsljus fortfarande var centralt för ljusförsörjningen i byggnader. Det andra fallets ljusbehandling utgår från ett jämnare och mer statiskt ljus baserat på arbetsljusets behov och tillkom under den tid då den elektriska belysningen redan dominerade. Det tredje och samtida exemplet visar på ett möte mellan dagsljus och elektriskt ljus. Kontraster och rörelse återkommer i ljusbehandlingen men på ett sätt som tydligt skiljer sig från 1900-talsexemplen.

The research project Interiors Matter: A Live Interior engages the interior’s temporality, duration and instability. It investigates this through artistic and practice-based research by the coupling of craft and digital techniques with a focus on architectural representation. During the first phase of the research 3D laser scanning was used to study a series of inhabited apartments in Stockholm. Domestic interiors are notoriously difficult to represent. This problem has throughout the history of architecture given rise to productive frictions that have propelled the discipline forward. The first phase of the research targeted the problem of representation of interiors and resulted in a small exhibition and a seminar, as well as in a peer-reviewed article, “A Live Interior: Environments, Assemblies, Materialities” (AJA).

A second phase of the project furthers the research on interiors and techniques for representation. In this phase, we are working towards an exhibition presenting the work, including translations of point clouds to built form, as well as alterations and re-assemblies of existing interior elements and objects.

Interiors Matter: A Live interior is a three-year artistic research project funded by the Swedish Research Council (Vetenskapsrådet). The project is developed in collaboration between KTH Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm and Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design in Stockholm. It will be carried out as practice based research through two teams – Ulrika Karlsson, Cecilia Lundbäck and Veronica Skeppe (KTH), and Daniel Norell (Chalmers) and Einar Rodhe (Konstfack).

Ines Weizman is Head of the PhD Programme at the School of Architecture, Royal College of Art, London. She is also the founding director of the Centre for Documentary Architecture (CDA), an interdisciplinary research collective of architectural historians, filmmakers and digital technologists.

Pablo Miranda Carranza is an architect and researcher interested in the history, ideologies and aesthetics of programs and code in architecture. He currently researches and teaches at the KTH School of Architecture.

Ulrika Karlsson is a Professor in Architecture at KTH Royal Institute of Technology, guest professor at SAC Städelschule and a co-funder of Brrum

Cecilia Lundbäck is a Lecturer in Architecture at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and a co-founder of Brrum

Veronica Skeppe is a Researcher in Architecture at KTH Royal Institute of Technology and a co-founder of Brrum

Daniel Norell is a Senior Lecturer in Architecture at Chalmers University of Technology and co-founder of Norell/Rodhe.

Einar Rodhe is an architect and a Senior Lecturer in Interior Architecture and Furniture Design at Konstfack University of Arts, Crafts and Design, and co-founder of Norell/Rodhe.
