The research project Interiors Matter: A Live Interior engages the interior’s temporality, duration and instability. It investigates this through artistic and practice-based research by the coupling of craft and digital techniques with a focus on architectural representation. During the first phase of the research 3D laser scanning was used to study a series of inhabited apartments in Stockholm. Domestic interiors are notoriously difficult to represent. This problem has throughout the history of architecture given rise to productive frictions that have propelled the discipline forward. The first phase of the research targeted the problem of representation of interiors and resulted in a small exhibition and a seminar, as well as in a peer-reviewed article, “A Live Interior: Environments, Assemblies, Materialities” (AJA).¶

A second phase of the project furthers the research on interiors and techniques for representation. In this phase, we are working towards an exhibition presenting the work, including translations of point clouds to built form, as well as alterations and re-assemblies of existing interior elements and objects.¶

Pablo Miranda Carranza is an architect and researcher interested in the history, ideologies and aesthetics of programs and code in architecture. He currently researches and teaches at the KTH School of Architecture.¶

Rummets och arbetets ljus i tre bibliotek Stockholms stadsbibliotek 1928, Norrköpings stadsbibliotek 1971 och Helsingfors centrumbiblioteket Ode, 2018.¶

Avhandlingsarbetet Det lysande och det belysta syftar till att utveckla nya metoder för ljusbehandling utifrån ett gestaltningsperspektiv och med utgångspunkt i dagens arkitekturutmaningar. Avhandlingen kombinerar praktikorienterad forskning med arkitekturhistoria, belysningsteori och belysningsteknik för att bidra till ljusets gestaltningsteori samt till konkreta metoder och verktyg i designprocessen. ¶

Seminarietexten som är ett utkast till en artikel bygger på fallstudier av ljusbehandlingen av dagsljus och belysning i tre biblioteksbyggnader – Stockholms stadsbibliotek (1928), Norrköpings stadsbibliotek (1971) och Helsingfors centrumbibliotek Ode (2018). Tillkomsttiden för biblioteken placerar dem i varsin samhällelig kontext med olika sociala, konstnärliga, byggnads- och belysningstekniska förutsättningar. Ett av undersökningens syften är att spåra de faktorer som i respektive fall påverkat ljusgestaltningen och ringa in skiften i byggnaders ljusutformning under det förra århundradet. ¶

Biblioteket används i studien som typologi för att undersöka utvecklingen av såväl rummets ljusutformning som ljus utformat för arbete. Arbetsljusets uppgift i bibliotek ger en inblick i hur aktuella regler och riktlinjer för ljus tillämpats i de tre olika fallen. Artikeln visar hur belysningsteorin, genom sin inriktning på arbetets ljus, över tid medverkat till ett synideal på bekostnad av rummets ljus.¶

De tre fallstudierna exemplifierar hur utvecklingen av belysningstekniken och dess ljuskällor möjliggjort ett intensivare, jämnare och mer styrbart ljus. De tre biblioteken uppvisar skilda förhållningssätt till kontrasthantering och rörelse. Ljusbehandlingen utgår i det första fallet ifrån kontraster mellan ljus och mörker kopplade till besökarens rörelse och tillkom under en tid då dagsljus fortfarande var centralt för ljusförsörjningen i byggnader. Avhandlingsarbetet Det lysande och det belysta syftar till att utveckla nya metoder för ljusbehandling utifrån ett gestaltningsperspektiv och med utgångspunkt i dagens arkitekturutmaningar. Avhandlingen kombinerar praktikorienterad forskning med arkitekturhistoria, belysningsteori och belysningsteknik för att bidra till ljusets gestaltningsteori samt till konkreta metoder och verktyg i designprocessen.

Seminarietexten som är ett utkast till en artikel bygger på fallstudier av ljusbehandlingen av dagsljus och belysning i tre biblioteksbyggnader – Stockholms stadsbibliotek (1928), Norrköpings stadsbibliotek (1971) och Helsingfors centrumbibliotek Ode (2018). Tillkomsttiden för biblioteken placerar dem i varsin samhällelig kontext med olika sociala, konstnärliga, byggnads- och belysningstekniska förutsättningar. Ett av undersökningens syften är att spåra de faktorer som i respektive fall påverkat ljusgestaltningen och ringa in skiften i byggnaders ljusutformning under det förra århundradet.

Biblioteket används i studien som typologi för att undersöka utvecklingen av såväl rummets ljusutformning som ljus utformat för arbete. Arbetsljusets uppgift i bibliotek ger en inblick i hur aktuella regler och riktlinjer för ljus tillämpats i de tre olika fallen. Artikeln visar hur belysningsteorin, genom sin inriktning på arbetets ljus, över tid medverkat till ett synideal på bekostnad av rummets ljus.

De tre fallstudierna exemplifierar hur utvecklingen av belysningstekniken och dess ljuskällor möjliggjort ett intensivare, jämnare och mer styrbart ljus. De tre biblioteken uppvisar skilda förhållningssätt till kontrasthantering och rörelse. Ljusbehandlingen utgår i det första fallet ifrån kontraster mellan ljus och mörker kopplade till besökarens rörelse och tillkom under en tid då dagsljus fortfarande var centralt för ljusförsörjningen i byggnader. Det andra fallets ljusbehandling utgår från ett jämnare och mer statiskt ljus baserat på arbetsljusets behov och tillkom under den tid då den elektriska belysningen redan dominerade. Det tredje och samtida exemplet visar på ett möte mellan dagsljus och elektriskt ljus. Kontraster och rörelse återkommer i ljusbehandlingen men på ett sätt som tydligt skiljer sig från 1900-talsexemplen.

KTH School of Architecture celebrates the contribution of Peter Lynch as Guest Professor in Architecture since 2015, during which time he has taught undergraduate and postgraduate studio, History and Theory of Architecture as well as authoring school-wide orientation courses in architecture and urbanism.

The focus of this event will be a lecture by Peter outlining his current collaborative research work titled Timescape Gardens which is scheduled to be included in the Italian Pavilion of this year’s International Architecture Exhibition of the Venice Biennale.

This interdisciplinary research and design project was developed in collaboration with dancer/choreographer Anna Asplind, data scientist Mats Nordahl (KTH), strategic planner Martin Heidesjö (Norrköping municipality) and landscape architect Patrick Bellan (SLU) and draws upon survey, documentation, and design work by over 550 students in KTH’s advanced architecture program between 2018 and 2020.

The project questions the spatial, social, and environmental potential of urban microparks which function as biodiversity preserves, habitat corridors, passive recreation areas, environmental monitoring stations and teaching gardens as well as their role in mediating human and non-human encounters. The project presents design proposals for two sites at two scales. At the metropolitan scale, the project will present a schematic design proposal for a network of microparks in Stockholm’s marginal green areas. At detail scale, the project focuses on the design of a Timescape Garden in Norrköping, Sweden.

The lecture will be followed by an opportunity to ask questions, reflect and discuss together with Peter.

Territorial Voids: An Inquiry on Metabolic Landscapes and Welfare Ecologies¶

Over the last decades, studies on urban landscapes, ecologies and metabolisms have emphasised the primordial role that infrastructures and unbuilt spaces play in processes of extended urbanisation, as well as the need to consider these systems an integral part of the contemporary urban space. In turn, a growing ecological concern has been raising awareness on the impact that urbanisation exerts in the environment, both in its industrial and extended variants, thus establishing a new understanding of city-nature relations and integrating in the analysis of urban fabrics questions of waste, energy, logistics or the pollution of soils and waters.¶

In its pervasive yet uneven development, regional urbanisation has left in its wake considerable unurbanized areas, or to be more precise, spaces unbuilt. Far from the mystic aura of the terrain vague, both in its concept and physically definition, these are spaces of a much larger size and scope that have emerged as a structuring element in territorial configurations. Instead of unprogrammed or unused spaces, these metropolitan or territorial voids hold multiple functions: productive, logistical, recreational or simply carriers of ecological and environmental values. Territorial voids are, therefore, not empty; in fact, they designate a very particular lack: that of buildings. They are not devoid of materiality nor use. Urban voids are otherwise full of materials and stories, activities and lives. They are equally embedded in urban plans and visions, as well as in legal documents and regulatory frameworks. Territorial voids are basically substantial parts of contemporary urbanities, of our thinking and experience of the urban condition, in most cases being the outcome of long processes of land management or exploitation.¶

In the Swedish context, the urban voids of peripheral suburban areas offer a highly significant case study to re-evaluate the role of unbuilt spaces as structuring elements of cities and regions. The notion of void was deeply embedded in both the aesthetics and the ideologies of Modern planning, not only in the ambition to create salubrious environments but also in the principles that informed a new type of spatial paradigm. By addressing the relation between landscape, ecology and urbanisation, the aim of this first seminar will be to scrutinize the notion of territorial void both as a concept and as particular type of space, and to examine the decisive role these voids had in the formation of Stockholm’s territorial system. Furthermore, it will highlight the relevance that landscape has had in defining modern and contemporary urban models, from welfare state ideals to ecological urbanism. Last, it will point towards the emergence of new cartographical methods and design approaches that operate at a territorial scale and that have shifted their focus from the built environment to the unbuilt, as far as to consider landscape itself an essential urban infrastructure, thus introducing in the analysis of the metropolitan space landscape methodologies, classifications and morphological types.¶
