I vanliga hjulspår och jakt efter svamp
Kära kollegor, vi fick en drastisk förändring på KTH när regeringen bestämde sig för att återöppna samhället. Många lärare har, precis som jag, njutit av att undervisa i klassrum igen eftersom interaktionen mellan oss och eleverna blir så mycket större jämfört med i zoomundervisning. Men vi har även lärt oss mycket av perioden då de flesta kurserna var digitala. Alla lärare har ändrat sina sätt att undervisa, och många kommer att behålla sina nyutvecklade digitala koncept framöver. Nu är det dags att lära av varandra för att påskynda anpassningen av undervisningen till ett digitalt samhälle. Jag tycker att livslångt lärande med digitala metoder är extra spännande!
Jag hörde nyligen om ett gott exempel från en annan skola där biträdande professor Johan Jansson lyckades öka antalet studenter från 20 till 10 000 (!) per år när han gav kursen High Performance Finite Element Modeling på edX som en digital kurs. Detta är ett imponerande exempel på hur digitalisering kan hjälpa lärare att nå en större grupp och öka KTH:s inflytande.
I ITM:s ledning fortsätter vi med våra möten som vanligt och vi träffas varannan vecka. Då brukar jag berätta om mina möten med rektor medan prefekter och administrativa chefen delar information från sina verksamheter. Vi har många aktuella och planerade aktiviteter. Vi håller dig uppdaterad genom vårt nyhetsbrev, intranät och APT-möten.
Protokoll från ledningsgruppsmöten
En viktig aktivitet som jag särskilt vill peka på är arbetet med att skapa en ny stark insitution för produktion genom sammanslagningen av institutionerna för industriell produktion och hållbar produktionsutveckling. Som ni nog känner till leder professor Magnus Wiktorsson det arbetet. Han har haft många diskussioner med medarbetare på båda institutionerna och med representanter från industrin. Här om dagen träffade till exempel jag och Magnus representanter från Scania. De gladde sig över KTH:s ambitioner att stärka utbildning och forskning inom produktion, eftersom det i sin tur kommer att gynna Scania. Senare i år, när arbetet har blivit mer strukturerat, kommer Magnus dela med sig av sina tankar och utvecklingen i en separat blogg.
Nu över till lite naturreflektioner. Under distansarbete har en del upptäckt att naturen är en fantastisk plats för reflektioner och avkoppling efter en hel dag med zoommöten. Jag tror att många av oss kommer att fortsätta besöka naturen även när arbetet är normalt igen. Jag kan starkt rekommendera att packa en matsäck och göra en tur till skogen för att plocka lite av det överflöd av svampar som finns den här tiden på året. I helgen fick jag ihop en liten korg med läckerheter, som ni ser på bilden. För dig som inte är så erfaren inom “svampjakt” är den självklara frågan, hur hittar jag svampen? Jag är ingen expert, men jag kan dela med mig av en erfarenhet från i höst. Följ de uppbökade spåren efter vildsvinen! Det finns goda chanser att du hittar din skörd i området där de redan har bökat efter svamp, eftersom de växer så snabbt!

Back to normal and mushroom hunts!
Dear colleagues,
We have experienced a drastic change in activities here at KTH when the government has decided that society should open up again. Many teachers like me have found that it is fantastic to teach in a classroom again since the interactions between students and the teacher become so much more active compared to only performing education using zoom. Nevertheless, we have learned so much from the period when most of the teaching took place in digital rooms. All teachers have changed their ways of teaching, and many will keep some newly developed digital concepts even in the future. Now it is time to learn from each other to speed up the adaptation of the teaching to a digital society. Especially the life-long-learning possibilities using digital methods is exciting.
I have seen examples from another school where Assistant Professor Johan Jansson increased the number of students from 20 to 10 000 (!) per year when providing the course High-Performance Finite Element Modeling on edX as a digital course. This is an imposing example of how digitalization can help teachers reach a larger audience and improve KTH’s impact.
On a daily basis, the ITM management continues to run our meetings as usual. We meet in the management group every second week. Here, I provide information from the meetings with the President and the Department Heads, and the Administrative Head includes information from their activities. We have many ongoing and planned activities. We will keep you informed in our newsletter and through your usual channels in the unit meetings.

An important activity that I wish to stress is the ongoing work on creating a new strong department focusing on production through a merger of the Department of Production Engineering and the Department of Sustainable Production Development. As you know, Professor Magnus Wiktorsson leads this work. He has had many discussions with employees in both departments and with representatives from the industry. As an example, yesterday Magnus and I met with representatives from Scania. They were happy to hear about KTH’s ambitions to strengthen the production area’s education and research, which will benefit Scania. We will let Magnus share his views later this year in a separate blog when the work has become more structured to keep you updated on this development.
Now over to some nature thoughts. During remote work, some people have discovered that nature is a fantastic place to enjoy reflections and relaxation after a full day of zoom meetings. I think many of us will keep visiting nature even when work is back to normal. I recommend packing some food and making a trip to the forests to collect some of the abundance of mushrooms available this time of the season. This weekend I gathered some lovely mushrooms, as seen from the enclosed picture. For you who are not so experienced in “mushroom hunting,” the obvious question is, how do I find mushrooms? I am not an expert, but I wish to share an experience I got this fall. Follow the diggings of the wild boars! There is a good chance that you will find your harvest in the same area where they have been eating since mushrooms grow so fast!
