Large but invisible base stations

Published Mar 25, 2021

The Swedish Foundation for Strategic Research has awarded Emil Björnson, visiting professor at COS, with a 5-year Future Research Leader Grant entitled “Intelligent wireless networks with innovative MIMO topology”. In essence, the project focuses on developing communication theory and signal processing algorithms for wireless networks using large antenna arrays. Instead of gathering all the antennas in visible boxes, deployed in masts or at rooftops, the antennas are instead distributed over walls or larger geographical areas. The goal with the research is to achieve a uniformly good service quality over the coverage area, by utilizing new phenomena that arise when using physically large arrays.
