Bridging Theory with Practice: KTH Students Explore Industrial Innovation at Siemens Energy

Students and faculty from KTH’s Heat and Power Technology (HPT) division recently stepped beyond the classroom to experience the forefront of aircraft engine technology during an immersive study visit to Siemens Energy’s state-of-the-art facility in Finspång, Sweden.

Organized as part of the advanced masters course MJ2524 (Aircraft Engines)  – and open to additional students keen on cutting-edge energy technology developments, the visit was coordinated by Jens Fridh  and Chamindie Senaratne . The goal was to bridge theory with practice and showcase how next-generation gas turbine engines are being designed to optimize engine design, engine performance, and material efficiency

The group toured several key areas of the Finspång site, including:

  • Final Assembly Workshop, where they observed gas turbine packs being mounted onto skids and explored high-tech test cells used for engine performance verification.

  • Additive Manufacturing Facilities, where they discovered how Siemens Energy leverages 3D printing to optimize turbine component design and material efficiency.

  • Materials Laboratories, which involved the exploration of labs dedicated to investigating material failures via advanced equipment similar to that in KTH’s Hultgren Laboratory .

  • Manufacturing and Machining, where participants witnessed the precision production of SGT-600 and SGT-800 industrial gas turbines.

Beyond the technical tours, the students also attended expert lectures from Siemens Energy’s combustion and additive manufacturing teams and engaged with trainee engineers to gain insights into career paths within the energy sector.

The experience left a strong impression on participants, one masters student sharing, remarked: “Visiting Siemens Energy felt like stepping into the future of turbomachinery, what truly amazed me was how far Siemens has advanced in hydrogen-ready gas turbines

The visit highlighted how advanced engine assembly and cutting-edge manufacturing techniques are shaping the future of turbine technology. This immersive glimpse into cutting-edge innovation reinforces KTH’s strong commitment to equipping students with the right perspectives to tackle tomorrow’s technological challenges.
