Climate-related research
The 2025 Swedish governmental research bill designates “Climate-related research” as a Strategic Research Area (SFO), emphasizing the need for socio-technical transformations in key sectors such as energy, transport, food, and the built environment.
KTH aims to take a lead in this initiative, aligning with its vision of driving a sustainable society through interdisciplinary research and innovation. The primary goal is to submit a competitive application for the SFO, while also strengthening future funding opportunities at national and European levels.
KTH is well-positioned for this role, with its Climate Action Centre already bringing together over 100 researchers and engaging students in impactful projects.
KTH's interdisciplinary expertise, its experience in societal problem-solving, and strong links between research and education makes a unique match to this SFO. Existing collaborations within e.g. Digital Futures, another KTH-coordinated SFO, further reinforce this position. The government's focus on applied, solutions-oriented climate research matches both IPCC priorities and KTH's capabilities. By leveraging its strengths, KTH aims to drive innovation and education for a climate-neutral, resilient future.
