Background

World leaders from 193 UN member countries gathered in New York on September 25, 2015 and adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). As part of the operationalization of the SDGs, the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (unsdsn.org)  (SDSN) was established in 2012, under the auspices of UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon. It is a global multistakeholder network that aims to identify and share the best pathways to sustainable development and mobilize academia, civil society, the private sector and financing institutions to find and disseminate innovative and applicable solutions at local, national and global scales.

Role and activities of SDSN Northern Europe

SDSN Northern Europe (unsdsn-ne.org)  intends to place the search for and creation of new solutions at the heart of its network activities, and to work closely with existing processes in politics and with business. We want to ask questions and join with others to develop answers. Planned activities include:

  • Develop national and regional pathways to implement the SDGs.
  • Create a data visualization interface called The Sustainability Atlas to be used for fast collection as well as visual representation of data and information.
  • Establish a Solutions Initiatives Forum (SIF) that can enable innovative science-based solutions to be matured via bilateral agreements or via Public Private Partnerships for solutions initiatives that cannot be realized by any stakeholder alone.

Governance and organization

The SDSN Northern Europe has a governance structure that promotes transparency, mobilizes resources, facilitates collaboration between members and partners, prioritizes action and ensures the effective operation of the network.

Membership is open to all universities, higher education institutions, knowledge centres and networks and other non-governmental institutions. Partnership is open to businesses, financial institutions, investors, foundations, national departments and international organizations.
