About Hans Bodéns research:

Engineering acoustics covers the generation, propagation and reduction of noise, which is a by-product of all kinds of human activity. Traffic noise, for instance, is a serious health problem for the people in Europe. An awareness of environmental issues in society drives the development of lightweight, energy-efficient and low-emissions vehicles and products. This presents new challenges in terms of maintaining and reducing environmental noise levels.

The research focuses on linear and non-linear system identification methods in low Mach number aeroacoustics applications. These methods include techniques for obtaining acoustic source data for fluid machines connected to duct systems such as internal combustion (IC) engines and fans. Experimental techniques are also being developed for measuring the transmission properties of components, such as mufflers, in ducts with relatively high flow speeds. Signal analysis techniques have been a key component of both of these applications.

One major development in the field source characterisation techniques has been the application of these techniques, through simulated experiments, to One-dimensional computational fluid dynamics codes used by the vehicle industry to predict the performance characteristics of IC engines. These techniques, developed at KTH, are now standard features of the dominating codes used by industry.
