About Lina Bertling Tjernbergs research:

Today, we often talk about smart electricity grids and the need to develop the electric power system in order to achieve a sustainable energy system. This development involves both new use of electricity, such as within the transport sector using electric vehicles that are connected to the grid or used for energy storage, and the use of new technology in existing electrical systems, such as smart electricity meters.

Lina Bertling Tjernberg has worked with various applications within the electric power system and its components for hydropower, nuclear power and wind power. Her areas of expertise are reliability modelling and maintenance management. Reliability modelling covers both system and component level, and plans for the future include analysing reliability for an electricity grid with a combination of alternating and direct current. One challenge involves modelling the effect of preventive maintenance, such as condition monitoring, to identify potential faults.

The aim of the research is to help achieve a high level of availability at a reasonable cost, and to contribute to a reduction in the loss of energy between the generation and consumption of electricity. A high degree of electric power system reliability will become even more important in the future as the need for electricity grows. After all, the future is electric.
