Mats Janhagen, born in 1961 in Malmö, has been Director Musices at KTH and the Academic Orchestra since 2019.

Thereby, he succeeded Gunnar Julin who founded KTH’s Academic Orchestra in 2002 and was a major part in making the orchestra into what it is today. Nowadays, the position of Director Musices is split between KTH and the Royal College of Music (KMH), where Mats is Associate Professor in orchestral conducting.

He studied French horn and composition at Malmö Academy of Music and conducting at the University of Michigan. At the young age of 19, Mats made his conductorial debut with Helsingborg’s symphony orchestra. Since then he has been Music Director for Östgöta Blåsarsymfoniker, artistic leader for Östersunds serenade ensemble, and Kapellmeister at Oscarsteatern in Stockholm. Between the years of 1989 and 2017 he was both Music Director and artistic leader of The Band of the Royal Swedish Army. Besides working as a conductor, both in Sweden and abroad, he has arranged and composed several pieces of music.
